Three French certificates dominate the market, and they are not interchangeable. Pick the wrong one and you can pass a hard exam that the office you need does not accept. DELF and DALF: a diploma that never expires

The DELF (levels A1 to B2) and DALF (C1 and C2) are diplomas issued by France’s education ministry. You sit an exam at one fixed level, pass or fail, and the certificate is yours for life with no expiry date. That permanence makes them the natural choice for students, and they are widely recognised by employers and universities as proof that you reached a given level. If your goal is to show, once, that your French sits at B1 or B2 for a job or a course, DELF is usually the cleanest answer.

TCF and TEF: scored tests tied to immigration deadlines

The TCF and TEF are tests, not pass-or-fail diplomas. You get a score that maps onto a CEFR level, and the result is valid for two years. That expiry matters because both exist in versions built for specific administrative uses.

For Canadian economic immigration, IRCC accepts the TEF Canada and the TCF Canada, and your listening, speaking, reading, and writing scores convert into points. Quebec has its own versions, the TEFAQ and TCF Québec, often used for its immigration programs. For French naturalisation, the accepted proofs include a DELF diploma at the required level, the TCF IRN, and the TEF for naturalisation.
